The flag of Greece includes nine horizontal bands of blue alternating with white. There are a blue canton and a white cross on it symbolizing Eastern Orthodox Christianity. It is generally believed that the nine stripes symbolize the nine syllables of the Greek phrase "Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος", which can be translated as "Freedom or Death". The flag was adopted in 1978.
