The flag of the United States of America includes 13 horizontal stripes of red alternating with white. The stripes have equal widths and symbolize the British colonies that declared independence from the Great Britain in 1776. The canton of the flag is colored blue and contains 50 five-pointed white stars representing the actual 50 states of the USA. The current version of the flag was adopted in 1960.
